Dreadlocks FAQ — Everything You Need to Know About Dreads

52 expert answers about human hair and synthetic dreadlocks — types, installation, care, maintenance, and ordering. Answered by Danila Deriabin, dreadlock artisan with 13+ years of experience.

General Questions About Dreadlocks

What are dreadlocks?

Dreadlocks are essentially tangled hair. The tangling process can vary, but at their core, dreads are hair that has been knotted together. At Daddy Dreads, we turn this natural chaos into controlled, beautiful art — an organized, manageable chaos.

When dreadlocks are properly crafted, they can also be easily untangled without damaging your hair. That's exactly why controlled craftsmanship matters: we can lock your hair into dreads and unlock them just as safely.

What is the difference between human hair and synthetic dreadlocks?

Human hair dreadlocks are soft, lightweight, and become even more flexible over time. They mimic the movement of regular hair, can be dyed, curled, or straightened, and are heat-resistant (safe for saunas). They have no expiration date and can be reinstalled multiple times — a long-lasting investment.

Synthetic dreadlocks are more affordable and great for beginners who want to experiment with different styles and colors. However, they have a limited lifespan (2–3 installations), can feel rougher, and are sensitive to high temperatures.

If you're new to dreadlocks, synthetic kits are a fantastic introduction. If you're seeking long-lasting, premium quality — human hair dreads are unparalleled.

What are DE (Double Ended) and SE (Single Ended) dreads?

DE (Double Ended) dreads have one base "arc" in the middle with two dread ends hanging down. When installed, the dread is folded over your natural hair, giving you two visible dreads from a single piece.

SE (Single Ended) dreads have one base "loop" with a single dread end. Your natural hair is threaded through the loop and braided around the dread, resulting in one visible dread per piece.

What are temporary synthetic dreadlocks?

Temporary synthetic dreadlocks are a non-permanent hairstyle made from Kanekalon or Henlon Hair (synthetic fiber). They are braided into your natural hair without damaging it. Quick to attach and quick to remove — a convenient way to enjoy the dreadlock look without long-term commitment. They typically last 1.5–2 months per installation.

What are natural (real) dreadlocks?

Natural dreadlocks are a hairstyle made from your own hair using a comb and hook, forming "locks" — sections of matted, tangled hair. They take longer to create than temporary synthetic dreads (24–72 hours for a full head), but they are permanent and grow with your natural hair. With proper care, they last for years.

How do I choose the right type of dreadlocks for me?

Consider your budget, lifestyle, and how long you want to wear them:

  • Just trying out? Start with synthetic dreads — affordable and easy to change styles.
  • Want a realistic, long-lasting look? Go with human hair dreadlock extensions — they look and feel natural.
  • Unsure about a full head? Try partial dreads first — just a few rows to see how they feel.
  • Sensitive scalp? Start with shorter dreads and the recommended volume to let your scalp adjust.

Not sure? Contact us for a personalized consultation.

What is the minimum hair length required for dreadlocks?

All types of dreadlocks require a minimum hair length of 7–10 cm (3–4 inches). This provides a solid foundation for braiding and installation. If your hair is shorter, you can add single-end extensions for extra length.

How many dreadlocks do I need for a full head?

The number of dreads depends on the volume you want:

  • Balanced look: 2 bundles of Single Ended + 2 bundles of Double Ended dreads.
  • More volume: 3 bundles DE + 1 bundle SE for extra fullness.
  • Less volume: 3 bundles SE + 1 bundle DE for a lighter look.

Every head is unique — contact us and we'll help you find the perfect combination.

What dreadlock length should I choose?

Our shop offers dreadlocks from 25 cm to 60 cm, but we can make custom dreads in any length — from as short as 5 cm to as long as 120 cm, depending on your request. Contact us to order a custom length.

Can I get dreadlocks with thin or fine hair?

Absolutely! Our founder Danila has thin hair himself and currently wears 35 thin natural dreads on top of his head. Here are general guidelines for thin/fine hair:

  • Full head: 40–45 DE dreads, or 40 DE + 10 SE (single-ended for thinner areas around the face and lower nape).
  • Top only: 30 SE dreads or 20–25 DE dreads.
  • Back of head: 25–35 SE dreads or 15–20 DE dreads.

These numbers are approximate and depend on your head size. Write to us and we'll tell you exactly how many dreads you need.

Are dreadlock extensions damaging to my natural hair?

No. When installed correctly and removed after the recommended period, dreadlock extensions will not harm your natural hair. To keep your hair safe:

  • Ensure sections are large enough to avoid putting strain on your hair.
  • Use a seam ripper for gentle removal — cut the elastics without pulling.
  • After removing, brush your hair with conditioner to prevent tangles.
What is the difference between smooth and textured dreadlocks?

Smooth (even) dreadlocks don't add much extra volume, but they look neater and more polished — a clean, well-groomed aesthetic.

Textured dreadlocks resemble the texture of mature natural dreadlocks. They give you additional volume and an interesting, organic texture.

Both options are great — choose based on your personal style and desired look. Browse our Smooth and Textured collections to compare.

Human Hair Dreadlocks

Why are human hair dreadlocks more expensive than synthetic?

Human hair dreadlocks are a premium investment. Unlike synthetic options, they have no expiration date — they can be reinstalled multiple times and last for years. They are softer, lighter, can be dyed, curled, or straightened, and retain their shape in high temperatures. Their durability and versatility make them worth every penny.

How long do human hair dreadlocks last?

Human hair dreadlocks have no expiration date. With proper care, they can last for years. They can be reinstalled multiple times, making them a long-lasting investment. They also hold resale value — if you decide to part with them, human hair dread sets can be sold globally.

Do human hair dreads look more natural than synthetic?

Yes. Human hair dreadlocks are soft, becoming even softer and more flexible over time. After each wash, they mimic the movement of regular hair, providing a seamless and natural look — almost indistinguishable from naturally grown dreadlocks. Our unique manufacturing technique makes them lightweight and airy for comfortable long-term wear.

Can I dye or color human hair dreadlocks?

Yes, human hair dreadlocks can be dyed to your desired color. However, bleaching is not recommended — it weakens the hair structure. If you plan to dye your dreads a lighter shade later, choose a lighter base color when ordering.

Can I straighten or curl human hair dreadlocks?

Yes. Unlike synthetic options, human hair dreadlocks can be curled or straightened with a hair iron. They are heat-resistant and will retain their dread shape after styling.

How do I wash human hair dreadlock extensions?

For newly installed dreads, wait 3–4 weeks before your first wash to let the locks set. After that, wash every 7–10 days using residue-free shampoo. After washing, gently massage each root between your fingers for 5–10 seconds to encourage natural locking and promote healthy hair growth.

Can I swim or go to a sauna with human hair dreads?

Yes! Unlike synthetic options, human hair dreadlocks retain their shape under high temperatures, making them perfectly suitable for saunas, baths, and hot tubs. You can also swim freely — just rinse your dreads with clean tap water afterward to wash off salt or chlorine.

Can natural dreadlocks be combed out?

Yes. Modern methods of making natural dreadlocks allow you to comb them out gently, preserving your hair in good condition. This is only possible when dreadlocks were properly crafted in the first place — which is why professional installation matters. At Daddy Dreads, we create "organized chaos" that can be both locked and unlocked safely.

How often should I visit a stylist for dreadlock maintenance?

For the best results, visit your dreadlock stylist once every 3 months for professional maintenance. Between visits, you should maintain your roots at home: once a week, hold the root of each dread between your fingers, gently press it against your scalp, and massage for 5–10 seconds. This weekly routine takes about 30–60 minutes.

Synthetic Dreadlocks

What is Kanekalon / Henlon Hair and is it safe?

Kanekalon is a general term for synthetic hair fiber used in dreadlocks. At Daddy Dreads, we use Henlon Hair — a premium synthetic material that doesn't have a chemical coating. This means less itching and irritation for your scalp. The lightweight nature of Henlon Hair makes wearing dreads a comfortable experience.

How long can I wear synthetic dreads before removing them?

On average, 1.5–2 months. If you don't remove them after this period, your natural hair regrowth will have knotted too much, making it very difficult to comb out. Always remove synthetic dreads within the recommended timeframe to keep your natural hair healthy.

Can I reuse synthetic dreadlocks?

Yes, a synthetic dread set can typically be installed 2–3 times before it requires correction or replacement. The ends tend to tangle over time, so some maintenance may be needed between installations.

Do synthetic dreads cause itching or allergic reactions?

Our dreads are made from Henlon Hair, which doesn't have a chemical coating — this significantly reduces itching and irritation compared to other synthetic options. Some initial sensitivity is normal when wearing dreads for the first time. If your scalp is sensitive, start with shorter dreads and the recommended volume to let your scalp adjust gradually.

Can I swim with synthetic dreadlocks?

Yes, you can swim in any water — ocean, sea, pool — without restrictions. Just make sure to rinse your dreads with regular tap water afterward: wash off the salt if you swam in the ocean, or chlorine from a pool. Pay special attention to rinsing your scalp thoroughly.

Can I go to a sauna with synthetic dreads?

No, this is not recommended. Synthetic materials are vulnerable to high temperatures. Exposure to boiling water, steam rooms, or saunas can cause synthetic dreads to lose their shape permanently. If you regularly visit saunas, consider human hair dreadlocks instead — they are heat-resistant.

What are curly dreadlocks and who are they for?

Curly dreadlocks are made from heat-resistant Henlon Hair — we separate it into strands and hand-craft each dread. They're perfect for anyone who wants a voluminous, eye-catching mane. Curly dreads are lightweight yet full-bodied, creating a lush and dramatic look.

Important: Curly dreads require attentive daily care — the curls can tangle with each other and need to be separated with your fingers every day.

What are ombré dreadlocks?

Ombré is a smooth, gradual color transition within the dreadlock — for example, from brown at the roots to blonde at the tips. The transition is seamless and natural-looking, adding depth and dimension to your hairstyle. Browse our Ombré collection to see available combinations.

What colored dreadlocks are available?

Synthetic dreads: pink, green, purple, ginger/red, blue — and more.

Human hair dreads: green, pink, raspberry/crimson.

We can create virtually any color you want. Just write to us and we'll craft a custom set in your desired shade.

Installation & Removal

Can I install dreadlock extensions myself at home?

It's possible, but it can be tricky — especially if it's your first time. For best results, we recommend visiting a professional dreadlock stylist. We're planning to release a video guide for self-installation of temporary dreads, but it's not available yet. For now, feel free to contact us for stylist recommendations.

How long does it take to install a full set of dreadlocks?

Creating a full head of natural dreadlocks takes 24–72 hours, depending on the number and length of the locks. Longer dreads (over 70 cm) or large quantities (120+ dreads) may require additional time. Temporary synthetic dreads are faster to install — typically a few hours for a full set.

How are DE and SE dreads attached to natural hair?

The installation process is similar for both types:

  • SE (Single Ended): Your hair strand is inserted through the loop, then split into 2 parts that wrap around and braid the dread.
  • DE (Double Ended): Your hair strand is split into 2 parts first, the dread is placed between them, and each strand wraps around one of the two dread ends.

The braiding technique can be a half-figure-eight or a Scandinavian braid, depending on the desired result and hair type.

Can I install dreadlocks on a partial area (half head, mohawk)?

Yes! If you're unsure about a full head, you can start with partial dreads — just a few rows on the top, sides, or back of your head. This is a great way to try the style without full commitment. Many of our clients start with a partial set before going for a full head.

How do I remove synthetic dreads without damaging my hair?

Use a seam ripper to carefully cut the elastics holding the dreads — this avoids pulling or tearing your hair. After removing all the dreads, apply conditioner and gently brush your hair to detangle any knots. Take your time with this process — patience is key to keeping your natural hair healthy.

Does removing dreadlock extensions hurt?

Temporary method: Removing dreads that were installed temporarily (braided in) is completely painless.

Permanent method: If extensions or lengthening were installed using a permanent technique, you may feel slight tension during removal — but in most cases, it's barely noticeable.

Care & Maintenance

How often should I wash my dreadlocks?

Synthetic dreads: Wash once a week with spray or liquid shampoo designed for synthetic dreads. Use a refreshing spray to keep your scalp fresh between washes.

Natural dreads: Wash every 7–10 days with residue-free shampoo. Wait 3–4 weeks after initial installation before your first wash.

Note: The more often you wash your dreadlocks, the frizzier they may become — keep this in mind when deciding your wash frequency.

What products should I use to care for my dreads?

For synthetic dreads: Use spray or liquid shampoo specifically designed for synthetic dreads, plus a refreshing spray for your scalp.

For natural dreads: Use residue-free shampoo only.

Important: Do not use wax or oils on your dreadlocks. They attract dust, cause buildup, and make your dreads harder to clean.

How often should I retwist my dreadlocks?

Maintain your roots once a week at home: hold the root of each dread between your fingers and gently press it against your scalp, massaging for 5–10 seconds. This routine takes about 30–60 minutes and promotes natural locking and healthy growth. Visit a professional stylist every 3 months for thorough maintenance.

How do I prevent my dreadlocks from frizzing?

During washing: Don't scrub or rub your dreads aggressively. Wash gently, focusing on the scalp.

Human hair dreads: Some frizz is natural and expected. Loose hairs can be tucked back in with a crochet hook. You can visit a dreadlock artist for a touch-up, or learn to do it yourself — we offer a detailed course on natural dread maintenance. Once you master the hook technique, you can correct your dreads at home.

Synthetic dreads: They rarely frizz. If they do, take them to a professional for correction. You can also try wrapping loose fibers around the dread using steam — but test on one dread first. Heat-resistant material (Henlon) won't be damaged by steam, but non-heat-resistant synthetic may melt. When in doubt, let a professional handle it.

How do I dry my dreadlocks after washing?

Follow these steps for safe drying:

  1. Shake excess water off your dreads.
  2. Wrap them in a towel and gently pat with your palms — this squeezes out water while the towel absorbs it.
  3. Place the towel on your shoulders to catch dripping water.
  4. Let your dreads air-dry naturally.

You can use a blow dryer on a cool setting. Never use hot air — it damages hair. Always make sure your dreads are fully dry before going to bed.

How to sleep comfortably with dreadlocks?

A few options that work great:

  • Silk bonnet or cap: Protects your dreads and keeps them tidy overnight.
  • Flip them up: Simply toss your dreads up onto the pillow above your head — this is what our founder Danila does, and it's very comfortable.
  • Loose ponytail: If your dreads are very long, tie them in a loose ponytail so they don't tangle around you at night.
What do I do if my dreadlocks start to smell?

Wash your dreads immediately. The most likely cause is that you didn't fully dry your dreads after the last wash, and mold has started to form.

Use a deep-cleansing shampoo — it will easily remove the odor. If the smell is strong, wash twice. Make sure to thoroughly rinse all shampoo out of your dreads, then dry them completely.

Important: Never go to bed with wet dreadlocks — this is the main cause of odor and scalp itching.
