Dreadlock Calculator
Five quick questions — get the exact dread count, recommended format, and a price estimate tailored to your hair. Takes about 60 seconds.
A free 60-second consultation with a 13-year dreadlock artisan
The Daddy Dread dreadlock calculator is the closest thing to a one-on-one consultation with a professional loctician — only it's free, instant, and works at 3 a.m. Answer five quick questions and you get the same answers you would hear in a paid sit-down: how many dreads your head actually needs, whether you should go SE or DE, the right length for your look, and a realistic price estimate based on real catalogue products — not a guess.
No email gate. No "book a call." No upsell. Just the numbers you need to plan a set of human hair dreadlock extensions, smooth crochet dreadlock extensions, curly dreads, or textured locs that actually fits your head.
What the calculator covers
The tool works for all four Daddy Dread categories, with formulas tuned to each material and craft technique:
- Natural dreadlock extensions — 100% Remy human hair, hand-crocheted with our 0.4 mm precision crochet hook. Lengths from 25 to 60 cm. Includes permanent dreadlock extensions, real hair dreads, loc extensions, and double-ended natural dreads.
- Smooth synthetic dread extensions — flat, sleek, steam-set crochet dreadlock extensions in premium Kanekalon and Henlon fibre. Available in DE and SE, 50 cm. Lightweight, reusable, beginner-friendly.
- Curly dreadlock extensions — hand-crocheted curl pattern, boho finish, synthetic fibre.
- Textured dreadlock extensions — boiling-water-set, fluffy texture, with the same 0.4 mm hook detail as our natural line.
Out of range? The calculator routes you to a custom request form with all your parameters pre-filled. We make custom lengths from 5 to 120 cm and any colour combination on demand.
What actually decides your dread count
- Hair density — thin, medium, or dense. The single most important factor. A thin-density head with a full-coverage goal may only need 30 pieces; a dense head wanting the same coverage can need 60+.
- Coverage zone — full head, full head with bangs free, crown only, or back only. Partial zones cut the count dramatically.
- Format — SE (Single Ended), DE (Double Ended), or Extension. DE gives roughly double the visible volume per piece, so you need around half the count.
- Material — natural Remy human hair (25–60 cm) or synthetic Kanekalon/Henlon (50 or 60 cm). Material changes available lengths and pack sizes.
SE vs DE — what's the difference?
SE (Single Ended) dreadlock extensions have one base loop and one dread tail. Your natural hair is threaded through the loop and braided around the dread, giving one visible dread per installation point. This is the most popular and natural-looking format and the standard for human hair dreadlock extensions.
DE (Double Ended) dread extensions have one base arc with two dread ends. Your hair is folded over the arc, producing two visible dreads from a single piece — so you need roughly half the count for the same volume. DE is especially common in smooth crochet dreads and synthetic dreadlock extensions.
Extension is a permanent attachment, crocheted directly onto your existing locs to add length or volume. Use the Extension option if you already have dreads.
Minimum hair length
For a reliable installation we recommend at least 5–6 cm of your own hair. If your hair is shorter, you can still wear dreads — message us and Danila will suggest options (single-end extensions, partial sets, or growing out a bit before booking).

The main FAQ page has 52+ detailed answers from Danila about dread care, installation, removal, materials, and ordering. Below are the questions we get specifically about the calculator.
Calculator FAQ
Is the dreadlock calculator really free?
Yes — completely free, no email required, no account, no hidden step. It's our way of replacing the "how many do I need?" DM thread with a 60-second answer. Think of it as a free consultation with a 13-year dreadlock artisan, delivered in a browser.
How accurate is the dread count estimate?
The formulas are calibrated against thousands of real Daddy Dread orders and refined every month. For typical hair density and full-head coverage the calculator lands within 2–4 pieces of what Danila would recommend in person. For unusual cases (very fine hair, oversized heads, or extreme partial coverage) we'd rather hear from you directly — message us via the contact form with your parameters and we'll fine-tune the count.
Who built the calculator?
Danila Deriabin — founder of Daddy Dread, professional loctician with 13+ years of hands-on experience and 4,000+ client sets. Every formula inside the calculator comes from his studio measurements, not a generic algorithm. Read more on Danila's page.
Does it work for human hair (natural) dreadlock extensions?
Yes. Pick "Natural" when the calculator asks about material and it will recommend sets from our human hair dreadlock extensions line — 100% Remy hair, hand-crocheted, lengths 25–60 cm. SE, DE, and Extension formats are all supported.
Does it work for synthetic, smooth, curly, and textured dreads?
Yes — pick "Synthetic" and the calculator will route your result across all three synthetic categories: smooth crochet dreadlock extensions (Kanekalon + Henlon, steam-set), curly dread extensions, and textured dreads. Available lengths are 50 cm and 60 cm; DE and SE formats are both supported.
What if my hair length or count falls outside the calculator?
The calculator handles 5–120 cm of dread length. If you fall outside the standard catalogue lengths, it switches to a custom-request flow and pre-fills your parameters into the contact form — Danila handles custom builds personally and replies within 1–2 business days.
How is this different from a paid consultation?
For 90% of customers, the calculator answers the same three questions a paid consultation would: count, format, and price range. A paid consultation adds video review of your specific hair, custom colour matching, and styling advice — useful for unusual cases. If after using the calculator you still want to talk through your set, message us and we'll do it for free anyway.
Can I learn to make dreadlocks myself?
Yes — Danila teaches the full craft in the Daddy Dread Academy. Online courses cover dreadlock making, sectioning, crochet technique, installation, and professional loctician training. Start with the free lessons if you want to see the technique before committing to a paid course.
